Brooklyn, NY (July 7, 2010) - The Alive in Hope Foundation and Futures in Education Foundation joined teams at the fourth Annual Going to Bat for Education Night to raise friends and funds for Catholic education. The Foundations raffled off authentic signed Brooklyn Cyclones jerseys, tickets to an upcoming game and the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a future game. As part of the efforts to promote Catholic education, Jamaru, a student from Holy Name School threw out the first pitch in honor of his academic achievements! There are no brighter stars than the children of our Catholic schools and Jaramu and others prove that every day. A big thanks to the Brooklyn Cyclones fans, our 'Angels' in the outfield, who helped us raise enough money to provide one Angel scholarship for 2010-2011 school year. There are few greater gifts than providing a child with the opportunity to succeed. You have made a tremendous difference in the life of a child!

Everyday, donors to the Alive in Hope Foundation create ripples of hope. Helping people they may never meet. Making dreams possible for families they do not know.

In 1996 the first gift was made to the Alive in Hope Campaign. That first expression of generosity begot another, and another, leading to the creation of the Alive in Hope Foundation. Eleven years later, $28 million has been distributed in support of the Catholic community in Brooklyn and Queens. One act of love calls forth another, creating ripples of hope for generations to come.

This short film is the first in a series of stories exploring the Heart of Philanthropy at Alive in Hope

Detective Thomas W. Higdon, Jr. Memorial Dinner Dance Raises Over $23,000

Thomas W. Higdon, Jr. was a detective in the New York City Police Department’s 105th precinct who passed away suddenly on October 21, 2009 at the age of 38. The Higdon family, as a way to turn tragedy into hope, decided to establish an Endowment Fund in the Alive in Hope Foundation in his name that would award scholarships to students at St. Clare’s School in Rosedale, where Tommy spent his formative years.

To help commemorate and honor Tommy’s life and to raise resources for the scholarship, the family hosted a dinner dance at the Immaculate Conception Center. New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly came to speak of Tommy’s dedication to his duty, his fellow New Yorkers and his community. Tommy’s siblings, Marc and Tiara Faith, read deeply moving poems they had written for their brother. All portrayed a man who put others above himself, exuded tremendous spirit and was an exemplary son, grandson, brother, friend and colleague.

The dinner raised over $23,000 and continues to receive donations from generous family, friends, and colleagues.
